What an MOT looks at.

An MOT involves dozens of checks on your car, ranging from the brakes and fuel system to lights, mirrors, seatbelts, windscreen wipers and exhaust system. Pick a point on the car.

1. Brakes

Performance, condition and balance, on the rollers.

2. Fuel system

No leaks, and the filler cap seals.

3. Lights

All present, working, aimed properly and the right colour.

4. Mirrors

Secure, in good condition and giving a view behind.

5. Seatbelts

Every belt and mounting, and that each one latches.

6. Windscreen wipers

Blades that clear the screen, and washers that work.

7. Exhaust system

Secure, no leaks, and the emissions within the limit.

When does yours run out?

An MOT lasts a year. Put the date on your certificate in and the page counts down to it. You can have the new test done up to a month early and keep the same renewal date.
